The tavern looks much more like Raven remembers it, empty. The same towheaded child sticks his head out from behind a pillar and reaches for a half-loaf of abandoned bread. Scarlett reaches behind her and swats him.
“Max, I already told you to go to bed!” The head disappears, along with the bread.
She turns back to Raven. “Your brother.”
There’s a long pause. “…Are we still being nice? Because I have all sorts of things in mind that you ain’t going to like. You know, like ‘what were you thinking?’ Or ‘oh, good, another kid whose life you can screw up.’ Or, ‘is this one actually a boy, or are we pretending for him too?’ Or my favorite, ‘are we playing guess-the-dad for him too?’
“What the fuck were you up to while I was gone, woman?”
